Royal Winnipeg Rifles (RWR)

Nickname: Lockie Fulton
Lockie Fulton grew up on a farm near Birtle, Manitoba, as the fifth of seven children. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons at age 16, gaining early experience in horsemanship and military discipline. In 1940, he transferred to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles when the Dragoons were not mobilized.
Deployed overseas in 1941, Fulton trained in England before taking command of D Company during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, at Juno Beach (Mike Red sector). He led his men under heavy fire, helping secure key objectives, including the town of Graye-sur-mer.
Later in 1944, he assumed command of the entire battalion, guiding them through campaigns in Belgium, Holland, and Germany until the end of the war. His leadership preserved the lives of countless soldiers while achieving mission objectives.
