🪶 Early Life
Born on March 9, 1891, in what is now Wasauksing First Nation, Ontario, Francis Pegahmagabow was raised by his grandfather after his parents' passing. He grew up learning traditional Ojibwe skills such as hunting, fishing, and medicine, which later proved invaluable in his military service.
⚔️ World War I Heroism
Pegahmagabow enlisted in 1914 and served with the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion. He was renowned for his exceptional skills as a sniper and scout. His bravery and effectiveness on the battlefield earned him the Military Medal with two bars, making him one of Canada's most decorated Indigenous soldiers.
🌍 Advocacy and Legacy
After the war, Pegahmagabow returned to Wasauksing First Nation, where he became a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights. He served as Chief and later as a national political leader, fighting for treaty rights and the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty.
